Ausgehend von einer eingehenden Diskussion der Eigenschaften und möglicher Analysen von Echo-Fragen wird dafür argumentiert, dass es sich bei Echo-Fragen weder um Interrogativsätze, noch um einen eigenen Satztyp, sondern um fokusgenerierte Fragen mit einer pragmatisch angereicherten Redewiedergabekomponente handelt. Ausgangspunkt bildet ein Vergleich der syntaktischen, semantischen und pragmatischen Eigenschaften prototypischer (als Rückfragen verwendeter) Echo-Fragen mit verwandten Äußerungstypen wie der Assertiven Frage sowie direkten w-in-situ-Fragen. Dabei wird gezeigt, dass das Phänomen der w-in-situ-Frage im Deutschen und Englischen nicht auf Echo-Fragen beschränkt ist, sondern auch Verwendungen als direkte Informationsfragen zulässt. Damit liefert dieses Buch erstmals einen umfassenden Überblick über das Phänomen Echo-Frage und leistet einen Beitrag zum Verständnis der Interaktion von Satztyp und Illokution.
