Die konventionelle Gothic novel, für die sich im deutschen Sprachgebrauch die Bezeichnung Schauerroman etabliert hat, wird im allgemeinen auf den Zeitraum von der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts bis etwa 1820 datiert. Diese recht exakte zeitliche Festlegung läßt vermuten, daß es sich bei diesem style um eine literarische Strömung handelt, deren Entstehung und Ende von epochenspezifischen Bedingungen abhängig waren. Die Gothic novel scheint somit eine Gattung zu sein, die nur im Kontext des Dualismus von Absolutismus und Aufklärung existieren konnte und deren Ende durch die Rationalisierung und Mechanisierung im 19. Jahrhundert bedingt war.
Der Blick auf die zeitgenössische, vor allem postmoderne Literatur zeigt jedoch, daß die im Schauerroman verwendeten Elemente und rationale keineswegs überkommen sind, sondern auch in der Gegenwartsliteratur immer noch den Effekt erzeugen, der für die Gothic novel charakteristisch ist: wohligen Schauer beim Leser hervorzurufen. Auf welche Weise diese Elemente und purpose in Peter Ackroyds Roman Hawksmoor verwendet werden, inwiefern sie eine den Theorien der Postmoderne folgende Modifikation erfahren und welche Wirkungen sie beim Rezipienten erzielen, soll Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit sein.
