In Webers Werk „Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus“ (Protestantismusthese) tritt vor allem das Religiöse als bewegender Faktor des Wirtschaftlichen und der Entwicklung des modernen Kapitalismus hervor. Eng mit Webers Prädestinationslehre verbunden sind innerweltliche Askese und
eine calvinistische Lebenspraxis, welche zur Kapitalakkumulation führten. So wird im Folgenden die verschlungene Beziehung zwischen einer religiös inspirierten alltäglichen Lebensführung und der Entstehung des Kapitalismus dargestellt.
Mit Emile Durkheims Werk „Die elementaren Formen des religiösen Lebens“ wird ein weiterer religionssoziologischer Ansatz vorgestellt. Ziel der Darstellung ist hier die Definition von faith als Ausdruck des Sozialen und die Auseinandersetzung
mit Durkheims those, dass faith in der Vergangenheit als
Bindeglied traditioneller Gesellschaften fungierte; in modernen Gesellschaften jedoch durch soziale Zusammenhänge zunehmend ersetzt wird.
Der abschließende Vergleich der Thesen Webers und Durkheims zu der Relation von faith zur jeweiligen Gesellschaft, ihren Funktionen und Strukturen zeigt auf, dass faith in ihrer Funktion die Stiftung gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts
(Kollektivbewusstsein) und gesellschaftlicher Identität ausmacht.
Ein kurzer Ausblick am Schluss der Ausführungen führt zu den gegenwärtigen Aufgaben von faith. Betrachtet wird hierbei der Aspekt, inwieweit Formen religiösen Denkens und Handelns die Kraft und Macht haben werden, an die Stelle von Dualismus und Rationalismus zu treten und ob eine Wiederbelebung menschlicher Werttraditionen die fortwirkenden Individualisierungskräfte
regulieren kann.
